Structural Biomaterials: (Revised Edition) Overview

“This book should go a long way towards filling the communication gap between biology and physics in [the area of biomaterials]. It begins with the basic theory of elasticity and viscoelasticity, describing concepts like stress, strain, compliance, and plasticity in simple mathematical terms. . . . For the non-biologist, these chapters provide a clear account of macromolecular structure and conformation. . . . [Vincent's work] is a delight to read, full of interesting anecdotes and examples from unexpected sources. . . . I can strongly recommend this book, as it shows how biologists could use mechanical properties as well as conventional methods to deduce molecular structure.”–Anna Furth, The Times Higher Education Supplement

In what is now recognized as a standard introduction to biomaterials, Julian Vincent presents a biologist’s analysis of the structural materials of organisms, using molecular biology as a starting point. He explores the chemical structure of both proteins and polysaccharides, illustrating how their composition and bonding determine the mechanical properties of the materials in which they occurincluding pliant composites such as skin, artery, and plant tissue; stiff composites such as insect cuticle and wood; and biological ceramics such as teeth, bone, and eggshell. Here Vincent discusses the possibilities of taking ideas from nature with biomimicry and “intelligent” (or self-designing and sensitive) materials.

Does Wrinkle Filler Creams Work? Here is the Truth

Most women don’t mind getting older because is a natural process of life, but what they cant stand is getting wrinkles because it makes them look less attractive and older than they are.

Celebrities and famous people use many types of anti aging and skin care products to cover up their wrinkles and look younger.

But it is not just for celebrities you too can have a beautiful looking skin without the need of invasive treatments like face lifts or plastic surgery.

Wrinkle filler creams are becoming very popular and many people use them to cover up their wrinkles and thus look younger. However you have to be careful on what wrinkle creams you use, most women try many different products that don’t work in hope to find the one that works well.

There are some effective anti wrinkle creams, but if you are going to use a wrinkle filler cream you have to know that you are not removing or reducing wrinkles from your skin, you are just covering them up for a very short while.

I have no problem in using a wrinkle filler cream as long as is made of just natural or organic ingredients that wont hurt the skin in any way, shape or form.

Most people don’t give a second though about what ingredients does the cream include and that is wrong because many wrinkle filler creams use ingredients like alcohol to cover up wrinkles.

You should not use a cream with alcohol because it drys up your skin and thus it wrinkles your skin. So although the wrinkle filler cream might actually cover your fine lines, you are hurting your skin and in the long run your skin will show up more wrinkles.

Now, as a said before as long as the cream uses natural ingredients there should not be a problem, the dangers are when a cream contain chemicals and synthetic ingredients.

Some are collagen fillers and customers have actually shown positive quick results, but collagen will not penetrate your skin, that means that it is only on the surface of your skin and will be gone a short while later.

My recommendation is that if you want to use a filler cream, do it if it only contains natural and safe ingredients but also use an anti aging cream that will work deep in your skin to activate the natural production of collagen in your body.

Tick Tock, Stop the Clock: Getting Pretty on Your Lunch Hour

Tick Tock, Stop the Clock: Getting Pretty on Your Lunch Hour

Ms.Stern’s book is a compendium of ways in which we can achieve physical improvements and in most cases improve our self-image and our self-esteem. The downside of the various methods used in changing physical features is also included. And most importantly, preferences are noted, although she explains, “We’re all unique and different applications apply to different people.” She also discusses the many causes of physical unattractiveness as well as prevention. And for you men out there, she included a section on hair restoration that is fabulous! I had no idea that men no longer need to “break the bank” in order to fill in those bald spots! Science moves on…

Most everyone reading this, I assume, is considering changing and hopefully improving something about themselves. It’s the “hopefully” that prevents them from moving ahead. Most of us have fear that in an attempt to having physical changes made by professionals and/or non-professionals, we might instead wind up with a disaster.

With most of us being rational human beings, we decide to do our due diligence and begin investigating the various means of achieving our goals. This may be exactly where you are in this effort. If so, then TICK TOCK, STOP THE CLOCK is for you! It is simply a “must read.” You will learn all about the different methods being offered. If you are planning soon to talk to some professionals/non-professionals about what you would like to achieve, read this book first. You will find that your communication with them is less stressful, and you will come away with a better understanding of their services. This, of course, will enable you to make a better decision on whether or not to move ahead.

I’d venture bet that Ms. Stern brings up physical improvement topics that you’ve not even considered–that you didn’t even know existed, and that you may even want to consider–now that you are aware of them. There are also new applications and new products that are scheduled for the marketplace in the near future. This kind of information could influence your current decision(s).

I highly recommend her book to anyone who would like to improve their appearance, from applying daily makeup, to having a full face lift!

Beautiful Skin : Every Woman’s Guide To Looking Her Best At Any Age

Beautiful Skin : Every Woman’s Guide To Looking Her Best At Any Age

Being a sufferer of chronic skin problems, I have read a lot of literature (both medical and other) on the subject of skin care, and I must say that I was quite pleased with this book. It is detailed, very straightforward and can be understood by those who know little to nothing about dermatology. It offers several methods for treating each skin condition and explores the benefits and drawbacks of each method. It also offers solid advice without resorting to any of the touchy-feely “love yourself and it will show on the outside” nonsense often found in beauty magazines. I was particularly impressed with the fact that, in addition to addressing purely cosmetic issues, Banks delves into important health concerns, such as avoidance of sun exposure, skin cancer and the differences between healthy and unhealthy skin growths.

My only complaint-and it is a minor one-is that the brief section on hair care does not completely apply to all hair types. To properly care for curly hair, the book to read is “Curly Girl” by Lorraine Massey.

Acne Scars Help – Methods and Treatments For Removing Acne Scars Effectively

Acne blemishes may disappear but they tend to leave behind a visible and ugly reminder. Treatment for removing acne scars are based on the type of scar left behind by the acne. There are dermatologist assisted treatments and self assisted treatments available.

Here is some information on these treatments for removing acne scars:

Dermatologist assisted treatment –

1. Microdermabrasion treatment is a process where a machine like a sand blaster is used for removing a fine layer of your scarred skin. This also stimulates growth of a new, healthy and scar free skin. Many treatments are usually necessary for good results.

2. Fractional laser therapy is a skin resurfacing treatment where damaged tissue is removed in fractions. It is an ideal treatment for concentrated scars in one area like the cheeks. Multiple treatments may be necessary again.

3. Excision is done to remove keloid scars that are fleshy. It is a minor surgical process where raised scars are removed. The wound is stitched after removal.

4. Collagen injections for deep depressions in the face are the best option as they restore your missing skin.

Self assisted treatment -

1. Skin lightening creams remove any discolorations or red marks. Topical lotions like this can be purchased over the counter and also by prescription. Liquorice extract, hydroquinone and kojic acid are some active ingredients. They are all skin lighteners that are powerful and fade out shallow acne scars.

2. Topical pockmark filler is used to remove the depressed acne scars. These can be bout over the counter as well. They are best for mild depressions in the face.

3. Exfoliation of your skin sloughs off damaged skin that is scarred. Salicylic or glycolic acid can be used.
